Excellent job by the Auburn University staff and VECAP in hosting the 13th National Issues Forum!

Creating this virtual Vocational Assessment Community is a great way to continue the fine discussions from the Forum and to give everyone the opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of vocational evaluation and career assessment.

I keep seeing signs of a resurgence in vocational evaluation and nowhere was it more evident than at the Forum. This blog is just another example. I thought the remarks by Michael Quinn at the ending session showed that when you provide a good vocational evaluation, you can have 10 vocational evaluators and a waiting list.

Really enjoyed the conference at Auburn. They did a grat job and the hotel staff were very accomodating. I have never met so many evaluators before. It was nice to talk about what I do and have people understand.
Would really like to see some of those work samples posted on the web site

Auburn did a magnificent job! In follow-up to resources for developing work samples, at Auburn I gave the name of an MTM analyst who has done work sample standards developmment for Valpar, Work Recovery Europa, Simwork Systems, Halnoun/BTE and others. He is retired from IBM as their MTM analyst/instructor. His name is Bill Snellen and he lives in Tucson, AZ. His rates are very reasonable and he understands well the need to develop defensible performance standards when developing work samples. He can be reached at (520) 296-0018. If you have any questions that I can help with, let me know. I'm at (303) 697-8849.

The use of work samples is a very important ingredient in any vocaitonal evaluation. However, in my years of using them, I have always been cautious of the norming. As a group, we need to make sure that work samples have up-to-date norms that are based on the general population. I realize that there are some who disagree with this (use of general popultation norms, but, I believe that this is an important issue.

I agree with Ron about the problems of using norms. For the last 35 years I have been promoting and using MTM standards for the work samples I have developed. MTM eliminate gender, culture and race bias. The only problem has been delineating performance standards within the MTM score itself. I have found the performance delineations defined in the research conducted at Vocational Guidance & Rehabilitation Services in Cleveland in the early 1970's to be the most accurate and I used these demarcations in the physical demands performance tests I developed for the original ERGOS work simulator system in 1986. They have held up well and are used throughout the world today. I suggest that any serious work sample developer get their MTM certification.

In response to Ron's comments, I agree. All the work samples I have developed these last 35 years have used MTM production standards instead of norms to remove any bias. Using MTM standards eliminate gender, cultural and race bias that regular norming inherently produce. The most difficult part of this process is to make sure that the MTM analyst is certified and that delineation of performance standards (i.e. competitive vs. below competitive or entry level competitive)is accurate. Using MTM standards help get work samples closer to criterion based assessment.
